Duncan and Miller First Love Unusual 10″ Vase COMPANY / MAKER: Duncan and Miller ITEM: #507 10″ Footed Vase PATTERN: First Love COLOR: Crystal Clear CIRCA: 1930s MEASUREMENT: 9 5/8″ H.- 4 3/4″ W. CONDITION We are thrilled to offer for sale a beautiful Elegant Glass Vase by Duncan and Miller. The lovely etch is their First Love pattern. First Love is not often found on this style vase. The etching is beautiful. The vase is in Undamaged Condition without chips cracks or mold damage. The vase is nice and clear without any evidence of use. This is a magnificent vase from a time when a great deal of care went into the design and production of our hand made glass pieces. You will be proud to display this wonderful creation in your home. First Love – First Love was introduced into the Duncan line in 1937. It remained in production into the 1940s. This pretty pattern incorporates a pretty floral arrangement and fan that are woven into a striking floral design giving it an Oriental flare. This pattern was made to go with the 1847 Roger’s silver plate pattern called First Love. First Love can be found on both Terrace and Canterbury blanks. First Love was Duncan and Miller’s most popular etched pattern. Its elegant flare caught the eye of many new brides during its production period. With diligent searching, a complete set of this beautiful pattern can be found today. The set is very large and includes many serving pieces as well as a full line of dinnerware. Duncan and Miller – The first Duncan glassware was produced by George Duncan & Sons in 1865. The company had its beginnings when George Duncan bought the Ripley and Company plant in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Early production was primarily barware and other utilitarian glassware. In 1891, George Duncan & Sons joined the United States Glass Company trust. However, this relationship was short-lived as the association was dissolved after the Duncan plant was destroyed by fire in 1892. In 1893, a new company began operations in Washington, Pennsylvania. A few years later a partnership was formed with long-time employee and designer J. Ernest Miller. This new Duncan & Miller company produced much of the fine hand-made glassware that is familiar to today’s collectors. Especially popular are several patterns produced from the 1920’s through the 1940’s. Some of the more popular pressed patterns include Canterbury, Caribbean, Hobnail, Nautical, Sandwich, Spiral Flutes and Teardrop. Swan figures were also an important part of the Duncan line. First Love, Language of Flowers and Passion Flower are among the more notable etchings. The plant closed abruptly in 1956. Some of the molds were sent to the The United States Glass Company plant in Tiffin, Ohio. A number of the former Duncan workers also found employment there.
