Lanna Style Stupa Relic. Old city known as “Meaung Hod”, Chiang Mai Province. Thailand. Overview:x THAI RELIC: An exquisite translucent ‘Phra Hin Kru Hod’ Meditating Buddha, recovered from an old Pagoda excavation in the city known as “Meaung Hod”, near the Burmese border, in the Chiang Mai province of northern Thailand. These artifacts were discovered in 1958-1959 (Thais calendar year 2502-2503), during the Bhumipol Dam construction, which was to completely flood the city, and surrounding region. The Buddha images as discovered were originally modeled from high quality quartz crystal mined from the earth. Translucent Relics of this type represent the God of infinate light – calm, peace, and contentment, and were typically used as commemorative objects, modeled in the form of Buddha images, placed in small clay vats within the interior walls of monumental ‘Stupa’ structures (conical towering spirals), which were constructed as religious sanctuaries. Image Details:x A sublime Buddha portrayed seated in a meditative attitude, with the legs crossed in the ‘Virasana’ pose, with left handing his lap, while the right hand is positioned in the gesture of “Calling the Earth to Witness”, the ‘Bhumisparsa’ mudra. Buddha is depicted wearing a long monastic robe, diagonally over the left shoulder, with the end fold of the robe draped just above the chest, and is indicated by incised lines. xxx The face has a serene expression, defined by delicately rendered downcast eyes, arched eyebrows meeting above a prominent nose, bow- shaped mouth with an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes. The head is carved in relief separating the hairline from his forehead, surmounted by a domed ‘Ushnisha’ which terminates into a bulbous ornament finial. Remnants of gilt-gold exist on the surface, as found. Definition: Phra (Buddha) Hin (Thai name for “Stone”). NOTE: This item was visually inspected by a gemologist through the Archaeology and Fine Arts Department of Thailand. The surface of the stone is displays remnants of gilded lacquer pigment embedded throughout the crevice areas. Excellent condition, with a natural aged patina, without cracks, chips or repairs. Considerably heavy with excellent clarity and hand polished surface, revealing little to no inclusions in this sculpture. EARLY METHOD OF MAKING CRYSTAL RELICS: Glass making in ancient Southeast Asia began with quartz, small pieces of the material would be finely crushed and mixed with ‘halophyte’ plant ash (a major source of alkali). The quartz-ash mixture was then heated at a fairly low temperature in clay containers to roughly 750 degrees Celsius, until it formed a ball of molten material. This material was then cooled, crushed, and mixed with color agents to make red, blue, or green. After coloring, the glass would be funneled into a cylindrical clay mold and heated a second time at a higher temperature. Once the container cooled it would be broken and the thick glass ingots that formed during the cooling process were removed. Finally, modeling, scraping, grinding, and polishing were the techniques most widely used during the finishing process of the object.xxxx “Early quartz crystal objects of this type have been defined as the first highly technological compositions, and to emphasize its status as an artificial medium, rendering it effectively a precious stone”.
