eBay BURST – Origo CD (2005 Relapse Records RR6657-2) Track Listing: Where The Wave Broke Sever The Immateria Slave Emotion Flight’s End Homebound It Comes Into View Stormwielder Mercy Liberation Item Condition: New. Factory sealed. Description: The Instru-metal/post metal/post-neurosis genre, or whatever it’s being called, is slowly becoming more and more crowded. Hell, 8 years.. there was Neurosis and Swans maybe? And now there’s millions of em! The one strange thing about this though, is that while crowding often results in a lower level of quality, this scene is putting out better and better records as it goes on, as bands lift the level of quality. While this doesn’t match the quality of Panopticon, or Fire in our Throats.. It does get pretty close. The good thing about this album is that while it does have the whole “Beautiful mellow build-up” thing going, it has a lot of energy, it’s not all soft or sludgy. When the Wave Broke starts out all soft and introspective, but tempo is quickly picked up, with some energetic riffs and screaming coming in, at a fairly brisk tempo. You can tell it’s energetic just by the song lengths.. 9 songs in 46 minutes! That’s almost grindcore song lengths, at least compared to Pelican, Jesu of Cult of Luna . As allmusic.com says: “Origo’s tradeoff is offering similar emotional release, without taking up all of your day.” Very true there. The shorter, more compact songs make everything a lot less predictable too, which is a good thing. The Immateria goes from screaming to a big melancoly riff with synths, before the drums coming back in with a mini solo, and a completely different part comes along. It’s fairly schizophrenic and disorientating at first, and the songs can take a bit of getting used too. There’s so many damn dizzying changes here, and every song is really different. Slave Emotion is really fast and still quite emotional, propelled by the frantic drums that are in every song, and make this album really different. Imagine the drummer for Mastodon or Dillinger Escape Plan playing in Isis, and you might have some sort of idea. The guitars are equally frantic and unpredictable, sometimes playing super fast riffs to complement the drums, other times just letting the chords ring out other the drums, creating a frantic, anxiety-inducing mood. Excellent stuff. While it’s rare, Burst do know when to slow down. Flight’s End is full of Soft, Slow moments, before breaking into a metalcore-ish chorus. It Comes Into View is also full of nice, Pelican style mellowness. So all in all, this is a very different record that takes a bit of getting used too, but it’s really quite excellent, and totally unique. Get Cult of Luna’s “Salvation”, make it 2 to 3 times faster, and you’ve got this record.
