Dumont, October 14, 1950-1951 / ABC, 1951- December,1952 / ITV 1954-56 This was the first televised version of the “Ellery Queen” mystery series. Being broadcast at the beginning of TV, the series was broadcast live, although ABC made kinescope recordings some of which have survived. Normal 0 Richard Hart was the star “The Adventures of Ellery Queen” also known as ‘a Kaiser-Frazer Adventure in Mystery’. This first series aired live and was well done for a Dumont net program. Florenz Ames played his father, Inspector Richard Queen. After only four months into the season, in January of 1951, Hart died of a heart attack during a rehearsal and was replaced on 24 hours notice by Lee Bowman, older, suaver, and slimmer. The program won the TV Guide Award for best television mystery of 1950 and lasted through 1952. In 1954 ITC revived the series with Hugh Marlow, the original Ellery Queen on radio broadcasts from 1938-1948, reprising the role. This is a custom made DVD collection made from episodes acquired in the collector arena. Some of these episodes were recorded live in the early 1950’s and recorded through the Kinescope process and that is the quality you should expect. Kinescope episodes are never as crisp as film or video taped episodes because to do this they pointing the TV camera at a TV monitor and recorded it as they broadcast the show live. Ever take a video of your TV picture? These episodes are rare, extremely hard-to-find and possibly all that still exist. In many cases, these episodes were transferred from a master source many years ago (master source to Beta or VHS to DVD as each media became available). READ MY FEEDBACK – many people have already acquired and have enjoyed these sets for what they are… a piece of TV history not available in stores. If you are unfamiliar with video collecting and do not know what a ‘collector set’ means… It DOES NOT mean every episode is pristine and without flaws. It DOES NOT mean all episodes are today’s TV quality. It DOES NOT mean all episodes will look great on your Samsung 65″ 4G Big Screen HDTV. Too many people believe every episode of every show is available in today’s TV quality. Unfortunately, that is not the case and you SHOULD NOT be expecting that. Please DO NOT buy any collector DVD set if you are expecting the same quality as though you are watching TVLand reruns on your Big Screen HDTV.
